Halfenger Residence
Built in the 1920’s in a stately neighborhood in West Roxbury, this Queen Anne home has been neglected in the recent past and is suffering from that neglect. Exterior columns no longer have structural integrity, siding is missing and/or deteriorating in places, water is infiltrating the foundation and windows have lost their seals.
Through careful site planning, thorough structural and architectural review and material research, Richard Alvord Architects is currently working with the home owners to renovate the home while remaining true to the building’s design and period style. We are currently researching period finishes and details to bring the building back to its former glory while working to provide the owners with the interior and exterior spaces they are looking for. In particular, we are incorporating modern technology in places where it will not affect the home’s aesthetic such as foundation drainage and structural columns that will fit into the existing column design. Where material choices and finishes will be visible, we are working to provide a finish that replicates the Queen Anne style, with current technology. Windows will be installed that will provide better thermal performance but remain true to the orginanl’s design. Throughout the project our work is to revive the home to its former beauty while providing current technology to allow the home meet today’s energy and material demands.
